OTTAWA

Hey Hey Hey,

So I just got home from a visit with the family in Ottawa. I had a great time and did a fair amount of painting.

I started working on a series of small acrylic panels I am planning on completing in the next few weeks. They're headed in a different direction then the rest of my work. Here's the first one:

I also did a little playing around with the poutine theme in acrylic, also on a much smaller scale than I usually work. These are both done in acrylic as well.

The larger piece I made while I was away branches into a different kind of close-up still life painting. I have been looking at a lot of works by Rosenquist and decided use his method of collaging images as a starting off point for the next group of paintings I will be working on. This is the painting I completed while I was away:

That's all for now!

PORTRAITS

Hello again,

Here are two portraits I just completed for a friend of mine:

Excuse the crappy photographs. Bye!

Poutine for all

Hello Everybody,

Summer is here, rejoice!

I finished off the semester by working on several larger poutine paintings. Here are two of them:

VOICE OF FIRE POUTINE, 4'x5', oil on canvas

CBC POUTINE, 4ftx5ft, oil on canvas

These pieces are a continuation of my attempts to attach a more solidified concept to my still-life paintings. I'm basically trying to figure out a way to paint stuff that means stuff.

The poutine series consists of portraits of Canadian cultural icons represented partially by poutine. There will be more to come so check back soon.

Bye for now..

Poutine, etc.

Hello Everybody,

I can't believe it's nearly the end of the semester... Crazy!

The last couple months have been full of thinking about what I'm trying to accomplish with painting. I'm about ready to throw this whole idea of repetition and patterning out the window. I am still focused on work that showcases found compositions within my everyday environment, but I am now further exploring ideas of identity and the autobiographical nature of these works.

My latest subject matter has been poutine. Check it out..

Last week I began working on a series of much larger paintings that delve a bit deeper into the notion of icons, more specifically Canadian icons. There is still lots of poutine though, don't worry.

Stay tuned...

Repetition

Hello people..

The end of semester has come and gone and after a relaxing break, I am ready to get back into the studio and back to work! I am counting down the days...

The most recent series of paintings I have been working on have begun to focus more on repetition than patterning. I chose subject matter found within my immediate environment; that is to say images I am faced with on a daily basis.

This is some of the work..

I'm hoping to continue to explore this theme of repetition over the next few months, but paint on a much larger scale.

This piece is currently on display at an awesome clothing store located in downtown Halifax, 24/twenty eight. Not only do they stock some great brands, but they also support local artists! Make sure to check them out..

Advanced Painting Group Show @ The Port Loggia Gallery

Ok ready..? Post number two!

My advanced painting class held an amazing group show November 18th at the Port Loggia Gallery. The show was of only site-specific work. Specific that is to the NSCAD Port campus. The result was some really interesting and provocative work.

My piece focused on the wood paneling that can be found throughout the building, as well as the light and shadows that are projected on them. I decided to replicate the strong light cast on the panels by the pot lights above them. I tried to make a painting that wasn't obviously a painting. I wanted the viewer to really have to look for it. I installed blue tape throughout the space to help conceal the painting itself and the result was successful. Many people needed to walk through the space several times before they spotted the large four by six foot panel. Others missed it entirely.

Check it out!

Talk to you soon!
